Cold Comforts

The first weeks of training can be quiet ones for the people left behind. New recruits surrender familiar routines almost overnight, while friends and families are left with hurried notes, unanswered questions and the occasional promise to call when regulations allow.

This week, many of the latest Red Eagles intake will finally be given time at the telephone. Officials describe the calls as a small comfort, even as exercises intensify and fresh deployments are discussed amid growing tensions beyond New Atlas. For now, recruits are still training. For now, home is still only a call away.

Distance changes things. Shut up and let them have their moment.
