New Atlas has never lacked for newspapers, though lately it seems to have acquired rather more people who believe they ought to run one. Small independents, neighbourhood sheets and so-called “alternative” outlets continue to multiply, promising sharper eyes, stranger stories and fewer editors standing between suspicion and print.

Traditional newsrooms remain unconcerned. Experience, standards and institutional memory, they argue, are difficult things to reproduce with a camera, a corkboard and an enthusiasm for red string.

Still, every paper has to start somewhere before it’s acquired. We’ll see about that.
